Emmaus Statement of Faith

The Emmaus Christian School Statement of Faith can be found on the school website.

One Creator God

The Lord God is one – Father, Son & Holy Spirit. He fulfils His purposes in creation, revelation, redemption, judgment, and the coming of His Kingdom, calling people to be united with Himself and with each other in love. Because God is the creator of all, ‘sacred’ and ‘secular’ domains of learning cannot be separated. Since humanity’s purpose is to glorify God, all learning should be directed to that end, seeking to enthrone God as the creator and rightful king in the way we teach, learn, speak and act.

Humanity and the Fall

God made humanity, both men and women, in His own image, giving all people immeasurable dignity and worth. Our rebellion against God sees us disconnected from Him, falling short of His glory and deserving of judgement. Our sin taints all areas of life and learning, damaging individuals and communities. It ensures the futility of all human endeavour and learning that is divorced from the knowledge of God.

Jesus

Yet God the Father has shown his love for us by giving Jesus Christ, His Son, for us. Fully human and fully God, born of the virgin, Mary, having lived a sinless life, Jesus willingly died in our place as a sacrifice for our sin. He rose victorious over every evil and against all sin, sickness and death. He was taken up to be with God, His Father, and will return one day in glory and power. As the exclusive and all-powerful saviour, we believe that Jesus is the key to life’s purpose and meaning, and is the unsurpassed model for human flourishing.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is God’s presence in the world, who leads people to repent and turn to God and makes the life and work of Christ real in the hearts of those who trust in Him. He is present in every Christian’s life, illuminating their minds to understand Scripture, giving spiritual gifts freely, and producing evidence of His presence – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control – to be used in the service of God and others.

The Bible

The Bible was written by people, inspired by God and has ever since been protected by God. It is our highest authority in all matters of faith and practice and illumines all learning and every dimension of human life.

The Church

The local and global networks of people who follow Christ in Christian groups and denominations comprise the Church: a new humanity, the family of God and Christ’s body on earth. Through the Church we are shepherded towards ongoing transformation into Christ’s likeness. Christ commissioned His followers to spread the news of God’s plan to everyone, teaching them how to find and follow Him. He commands us to love God with all our heart, mind and strength, and to love others through service, reconciliation, and the provision of liberty to all who are oppressed and broken-hearted, until Jesus comes again.

The Family

Along with the Church, families are a precious gift to the world, as the primary community in which parents are to teach their children how to love, serve, worship and grow in character. Families are formed and sustained through the gift of marriage, an institution that is to be honoured, whether or not we are called into it ourselves. The Bible’s teaching, as upheld throughout the history of the Christian Church, is that marriage is the relationship between one man and one woman, entered into for life to the exclusion of all others, and is the proper context within which God’s good gift of sexuality is to be enjoyed.

A Christian
A Christian is someone who responds to God’s grace by being ‘born again’ into a new life of trust and obedience to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. This journey is not entered into alone, but in community with other believers through shared worship, fellowship, and service in the Church.

Staff Matters

1. Religious Character of the School

  1.  Emmaus is an institution founded in accordance with the doctrines, tenets, beliefs and teaching of the Christian religion as understood by a consensus of interpretation throughout the course of the long history of Christianity (see our Statement of Faith for more detail). In practical terms, this means our beliefs (outlined further in our Statement of Faith) are those shared by the major Christian denominations (Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Baptists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals etc). Emmaus does not seek to align itself with or advocate for views that are novel or unsettled within the church.
  2. The particular doctrines, tenets, beliefs or teaching of the School are consistent with the Statement of Faith of the School and reflected in a range of documents and policies of the School.  These doctrines, tenets, beliefs and teaching address issues including sex, sexuality, sexual conduct and relationships.
  3. The Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of the beliefs of the School. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that the School believes.
  4. For purposes of the School’s doctrines, tenets, beliefs or teaching, the members in a general meeting are the School’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application provided that any such interpretation shall be consistent with the Statement of Faith.

2. Fundamental Religious Conviction Requirements

  1. It is an inherent genuine occupational requirement and essential condition of employment and continuing employment that a staff member possesses and maintains a firm personal belief consistent with the Statement of Faith of the School, together with an active commitment to and involvement with a Christian church holding a doctrinal position consistent with the Statement of Faith.  All staff members are role models and play a part of the expression of the religious character of the School.
  2. Accordingly, all staff members are expected by the School to possess and maintain throughout their employment a firm personal belief consistent with the Statement of Faith of the School, together with an active commitment to and involvement with a Christian church holding a doctrinal position consistent with the Statement of Faith.
  3. Should a staff member cease to have a firm personal belief consistent with the Statement of Faith or cease to maintain an active commitment to and involvement with an appropriate Christian church the staff member shall inform the School.

3. Lifestyle and Values

It is acknowledged that:

  1. The School bases its teachings and beliefs on the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments which the School regards as the inspired and inerrant Word of God.
  2. These teachings are expounded in many of the School’s public and internal documents, including the Statement of Faith.
  3. These documents reflect the School’s understanding of the lifestyle and values which all staff members of the School regardless of their role are required to support and maintain at all times and are to be understood as source documents, defining the School’s doctrines, tenets, beliefs and teachings.
  4. Without limiting the School’s Constitution, Statement of Faith and related documents, which may provide more specific information, the School is an institution conducted in accordance with the doctrines, tenets, beliefs or teachings of the protestant stream of the Christian religion and the provisions in this policy are included in good faith to avoid injury to the religious susceptibilities of adherents of the protestant stream of the Christian faith.
  5. It is an inherent genuine occupational requirement and essential condition of employment and continuing employment that all staff members of the School are required to be seen to conduct themselves at all times, in a manner consistent with these teachings and beliefs and in accordance with the Christian ethos of the School, and any school code or policy that may be developed from time to time, thus providing a specifically Christian role model and example to all students and families associated with the School.
  6. It is an inherent, genuine occupational requirement and essential condition of employment and continuing employment that all staff members of the School must not act in a way that they know, or ought reasonably to know, is contrary to the religious beliefs and values of the School. Nothing in their deliberate conduct shall be incompatible with the intrinsic character of their position.
  7. Acting contrary to the lifestyle and values requirements set out in this policy is likely to cause injury to the religious susceptibilities of members of the School community who adhere to the School’s doctrines, tenets, beliefs and teachings.
  8. If a staff member acts contrary to the lifestyle and values requirements set out in this clause the matter will be dealt with in accordance with the normal school procedures in relation to conduct and performance management.
  9. All staff regularly and frequently attend a Christian church (being a church holding a doctrinal position compatible with the Statement of Faith of the School) and regularly and frequently participate in staff devotions and worship services held at the School.

4. Other and Related Expectations of Teaching Staff

Prospective employees must be aware that successful applicants will be issued with an Offer of Employment including the following contractual expectations:

  1. To be fully cognisant of the vision and philosophy of the School;
  2. Live a lifestyle consistent with Biblical teachings and as set out in the ‘Lifestyle and Values’ clause above).
  3. Carry out all duties with the utmost integrity and to the best of your ability;
  4. Maintain an active faith in God through our Lord Jesus Christ and support the building up of students and other staff in the faith by words and acts of encouragement and service.
  5. Be teachable, respect others, and be gracious when the needs and/or priorities of the school take precedence in decisions over their own needs and/or priorities.
  6. Maintain appropriate TQI and WWVP registrations.
  7. Maintain a neat professional appearance.
